Who is this site for?
Net Zero Home is designed to help and encourage anyone who would like to reduce their home's impact on the planet and climate, but needs to make this work financially too.
That's why, throughout the site, we have the dual focus of net zero carbon, net zero bills. We only recommend actions that will pay you back, one way or another. This may be through income from exporting your solar energy, reduced or neutralised heating bills, or value added to your home.
We know that some of you may be well off enough not to worry too much about the financials and that's great, there is guidance aplenty here, but, but many can't do that.
Our guidance is intended primarily for those retrofitting existing homes, whether this is bolt-on tech or a full deep energy retrofit. If you're building a new home then you will still find the main principles applicable, and the guidance on solar power, heat pumps and smart tariffs will be very relevant too - but perhaps the most important message to both retrofitter and self-builder is the Net Zero Home is easily achievable, so why not go for it?

Do you need to be an energy geek? Certainly not! We intend our content for homeowners who are competent but not specialists. As with any home improvement measures, you can dive in as deep as you like but then stop and hand over to professional installers. We do provide technical detail for those who want it.

If you rent your home, we're aware this makes it much harder to achieve a net zero home; whether you're a tenant or landlord the gap between who pays for net zero investments and those who benefit - so called split incentives - means it's hard to make it work financially. But the content on smart tariffs is valuable for tenants too.

Our guidance is primarily aimed at UK based homeowners, as the financial and regulatory content is specific to the UK. The general principles, however, apply in many other countries and we hope to internationalise our content in due course. We'd be pleased to hear from any of you who would like this, so we can prioritise other nations.

About Us
Net Zero Home is a project of sustainability consultant Rupert Fausset, a UK based specialist in energy and transport impacts and solutions.
Since 2017 Rupert has been updating his family home in East Anglia, UK, aiming to use methods that are available to anyone, not just specialists, self builders or the very rich, to get as close to Net Zero as possible.
By 2023 we achieved Net Zero carbon and net zero cost, and it was becoming clear that widespread innovation in energy use and supply had made the Net Zero home a realistic possibility for the many, not just the few. Net Zero energy cost is also a realistic goal - and indeed could rapidly become the norm.

Recognising that this potential is virtually unknown to most people, he decided to distill his experience into a "how to" website.
